OxBow Tour Informative Experience

Six Gunnison locals took a tour of the Elk Creek Mine owned by Oxbow Mining, LLC, located in Somerset, CO and came away with a new respect and understanding of mining. Rob Thurman with Oxbow Mining, LLC and Rebecca Rose coordinated the event for Gunnison County Republicans. The first two hours consisted of a “classroom” presentation. During that time, tour participants learned about the process of removing coal, safety, energy production, methane gas, statistics and efficiency of coal energy. Many of the engineers, human resource coordinator, and others joined the group over lunch. Open discussion consisted of employee benefits, longevity and safety. Four locals went with Doug Smith, Chief Mining Engineer, three three miles into the mine. “We saw first-hand how the Continuous Miner chewed up a wall of coal, shuttled it and placed the coal on the conveyor belt. We were able to visualize the “Pillars” and Longwall. The experience was highly educational,” stated Rebecca about her underground experience. Carolyn said, “I felt the people at the mine were so gracious and open to us coming and learning about the business and that they want Gunnison area people to be more aware of them and their business benefit to our area. “ We wish to thank the many folks at OxBow for their hospitality. At this weekend’s Republican State Assembly, delegates to the State Senate District 5 Assembly sent a clear message that they have a consensus candidate and are ready to move forward full force into the general election process. Republican Senate Candidate Bob Rankin, a political neophyte, took the party’s nomination with over 72 percent of the vote.

“This shows our message of building a stronger economy through less regulation, creating real energy jobs while developing reliable and affordable energy resources is resonating with the voters throughout this eleven county district,” said Rankin. Rankin and his wife Joyce have been traveling the entire district over the last 8 months and have had the opportunity to visit the many industries represented in the area.

Rankin went on to say, “Our coal miners shouldn’t go to bed every night worried about their job stability, and we shouldn’t be pitting our energy resources against each other. All this does is create higher energy prices that hurt our residents and businesses whether they are small business owners in Salida, or potato farmers in the San Luis Valley.”

Delegates to the Republican Assembly are proportioned by each county and selected through the caucus process that began back in March and culminated with their voting at the State Assemblies this past weekend.

“I’m very happy with the support we have received to date in the political process, however the battle has just begun. We will work tirelessly through November exposing the out-of-touch, liberal voting record of my Democrat opponent and this administration. Four years ago voters bought a bill of goods that has only stifled their ability to prosper,” said Rankin.

State Senate District 5 includes Alamosa, Chaffee, Conejos, Costilla, Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Mineral, Pitkin, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties.

Delegates chosen to go to State Assembly

After a successful County Assembly, Gunnison Republicans have elected 14 Delegates to represent us at the State Assembly May 22, 2010 in Loveland,CO.  There are also 12 Alternates in the wings waiting for any who can’t make the trip to the Front Range.  We also heard from many candidates who made the trip to Gunnison to give us their five minute speeches to educate us on the issues going on in Washington, DC and Colorado.  After a straw poll, Phil Chamberland has emerged as our candidate for County Commissioner to run against Jim Starr.  Gunnison Republicans are thankful to Mark Ewing for his willingness to commit to the race and are hoping he’ll use his skills somewhere else in the County.
